Gloria Naylor (25. Januar 1950 - 28. September 2016), eine der berühmtesten und erfolgreichsten afroamerikanischen Schriftstellerinnen der Gegenwart, war ihren Vorgängerinnen voraus und zeichnete ein komplexes Bild der historisch begrenzten Wahlmöglichkeiten und der Identität schwarzer Frauen in ihrer Romanserie, die ein Quartett bildete - The Women of Brewster Place (1982), Linden Hills (1985), Mama Day (1988) und Bailey's Cafe (1992). Das Buch konzentriert sich auf Naylors vier Romane, in denen es um weibliche Bindungen geht, um die Notwendigkeit der Bildung einer Gemeinschaft von Müttern und Schwestern, um die Unterdrückung der afroamerikanischen Frauen auf der Grundlage von Rasse, Klasse und Geschlecht zu bekämpfen und sich dabei selbst zu stärken.
