Entre sus novelas cabe destacar el ciclo de las «novelas católicas», en las que afronta el tema de lo trascendente: Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter y The End of the Affair, todas llevadas al cine. Pero su aportación más célebre al séptimo arte ha sido el guión de The Third Man, elegida por el British Film Institute como mejor película británica del siglo XX.
