El volumen reúne sendos ensayos sobre Bach y sobre la ópera Don Giovanni de Mozart, que aunque habían aparecido en colecciones de sus respectivos autores, Dilthey y Kierkegaard, nunca se habían editado como títulos exentos, como ahora. El tercer título, en soporte DVD, es una película de Federico Fellini, Prova d’orchestra (1979), que redondea la temática musical desde del punto de vista contemporáneo. La película está presentada por el propio director, que repasa las aportaciones del compositor musical de prácticamente todas sus películas desde 1952 –Ensayo de orquesta fue la última-, que fue Nino Rota (Oscar en 1974 a la mejor banda sonora por el Padrino II).
