Recurriendo a sus años como activista y comentarista de los problemas de las mujeres en Medio Oriente, Eltahawy explica que desde que comenzó la Primavera Árabe en 2010, las mujeres en el mundo árabe han tenido dos revoluciones que afrontar: una lucha junto a los hombres contra los regímenes opresivos y otro lucha contra todo un sistema político y económico que reprime a las mujeres en estos países. Su libro es una súplica de indignación y acción en su nombre, enfrentando una "mezcla tóxica de cultura y religión que pocos parecen dispuestos o capaces de desenredar para no blasfemar u ofender".
