Esta novela se enmarca en el género de la ucronía. Los hechos transcurren el año 1974 en Santiago de Chile, luego de doce meses del golpe de Estado que derrocó a Salvador Allende. Motivado por la venganza y el desamor, un pintor, su asistente francés y otros colaboradores diseñan un plan para asesinar a un poderoso agente de la policía secreta de Augusto Pinochet, y con él, crece con fuerza la opción de un atentado contra el dictador. Los rebeldes usarán para ello un mural pintado al óleo de grandes dimensiones ubicado en una casona patrimonial del barrio Lastarria. El resultado de dichas acciones es descubierto cuatro décadas más tarde por un joven estudiante de historia del arte.
