Synopsis "El Viaje del Challenger"

En 1872 el Challenger salió de Portsmouth en un viaje que había de llevarlo a dar la vuelta al mundo, atravesando ocho veces el ecuador, hasta los hielos antárticos y a lo largo de 68.000 millas náuticas durante mil días en el mar. Era una corbeta de tres mástiles con vapor auxiliar y, junto a una tripulación de 243 hombres, transportaba un equipo de científicos al mando del profesor Wyville Thomson. El viaje del Challenger fue una expedición pionera de enorme importancia. El ambicioso objetivo del viaje era cartografiar las profundidades, el movimiento y el contenido de los mares, explorar los océanos en busca de organismos marinos, de pistas de fenómenos climáticos y de minerales.
