Crecía vertiginosamente en tamaño y población, merced a un ambicioso proyecto de ampliación urbana cuya realización fue, sin embargo, bastante más caótica de lo que se preveía sobre el papel. Al actual distrito de Arganzuela "el Ensanche Sur" le tocó ser el principal laboratorio de la transformación industrial de la ciudad.
