Synopsis "Es Conveniente Engañar al Pueblo?"

En 1778, el monarca prusiano Federico II auspició un concurso de disertaciones filosóficas sobre si era útil para el pueblo ser engañado, bien induciéndole a nuevos errores o bien manteniéndolo en los que ya estaba. Condorcet escribió su disertación para este concurso, si bien no llegó finalmente a presentarla. La cuestión sobre si el gobernante debe o no mentir al pueblo ya era objeto de debate y reflexión en el siglo XVIII, como muestra el poema epigramático de Goethe “Mentira o engaño”, en que el autor francofortino manifiesta su talante más cortesano dejando entrever que tal acción era un mal menor o, quizá, necesario: «¿Debe engañarse al pueblo? / Desde luego que no. / Mas si le echas mentiras, / mientras más gordas fueren / resultarán mejor».
