Synopsis "fatigue of fiber-reinforced composites (in English)"
the life of composite structures is considerably affected by fatigue loads. the scientific community has recognized that most of structural failures are due to fatigue loads. structures like bridges, airplanes, and wind turbines, are over-designed by the adoption of high safety factors to avoid unexpected failure. to reduce these factors, and subsequently the cost (for the construction and operation) of these structures, an understanding of the fatigue behavior of the constituent materials is essential. in real life, irregular loading patterns are applied on structures, and complex stress fields of irregular time dependence are developed at each point of them. in order to characterize fatigue behavior and be able to predict the fatigue life of components loaded under such loading conditions, the design engineer should be conversant of a wide number of disciplines. fatigue of fiber-reinforced composites presents a wealth of information accumulated over more than ten years of research. highly scientific subjects are addressed with simplicity, and explained thoroughly. the fatigue behavior of several types of composite materials is described by presentation of numerous experimental results. based on this experimental data, theoretical models are demonstrated and their ability to predict fatigue life is thoroughly discussed. using all of the aforementioned information, a complete design methodology is introduced. finally, novel methods for modeling/predicting the fatigue life of composites are described. fatigue of fiber-reinforced composites is a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and materials science.
