Declan Hyde is the star of the Matros F1 racing team. Talented, temperamental and with all the attitudes of a spoilt child his flamboyance attracts attention both on and off the track. He, along with the teams owner Gerald Matthews, have worked to make the team what it is today; but nothing can stay the same forever. The arrival of a new, younger team mate puts pressure on Declan and causes rifts in the once harmonious Matros compound. This, added with the arrival of a fanatical and obsessive young female fan into the teams workplace pushes Declan to the edge and causes him to drive too dangerously on the track causing a massive accident which nearly ends the life of his closest friend and rival Kurt Braun. Through the course of a year in Formula One, First follows Declan and his team mates, his lovers and his rivals. First is the story of Declan's struggle to cope with rivalry, death and love. It follows his fall to his lowest ebb and his struggle to regain respect, trust and confidence in one of the world's most dangerous sports.
