“Escribir sobre Cuba siempre es un problema. No todos quedan conformes con lo que el autor expresa y se corre el riesgo de ser catalogado como anticubano; por ese motivo, he tratado de manejar esta historia con la mayor imparcialidad, sin olvidar que este relato está basado en un hecho real y que me fue narrado por el mismo protagonista. Si bien es cierto que murió hace ya algunos años, no es menos cierto que los acontecimientos narrados por él, poco antes de morir, me persiguieron durante mucho tiempo, interfiriendo en mis pensamientos, soñando con sus palabras, gritando en mi mente, llorando con sus penas, obligándome a tomar partido por esa difícil verdad que, por comodidad, nos negamos a ver”.
