In Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass die Ernährung einen gro en Einfluss auf die Entstehung und das Fortschreiten von Krebs hat und dass Mutationen Schlüsselelemente in neoplastischen Prozessen sind, wächst das Interesse an der Untersuchung von Verbindungen mit antigenotoxischen und antimutagenen Eigenschaften aus Pflanzenextrakten. Melissa officinalis L., in Brasilien als Zitronenmelisse oder Melisse bekannt, wird traditionell als wässriger oder alkoholischer Extrakt zur Behandlung von Fieber, Erkältungen, Verdauungsstörungen im Zusammenhang mit nervöser Anspannung, Schilddrüsenüberfunktion, Depressionen, leichter Schlaflosigkeit, Epilepsie, Kopf- und Zahnschmerzen u. a. verwendet. Es gibt jedoch keine Informationen über diese Pflanze in Bezug auf schützende oder toxikogene Wirkungen. Ziel dieser Studie war es daher, die Antimutagenität/Antigenotoxizität und Mutagenität/Gentoxizität der wässrigen und ethanolischen Extrakte dieser Pflanze zu untersuchen.
