Der Ich-Erzähler Dr. med. Georg Letham jun. schreibt sich frei von seiner Schuld. In Georg Lethams Herzen gibt es keine Liebe. Er peinigt seine "unschöne, liebessüchtige", aber wohlhabende Gattin. Die ihm hündisch ergebene, alternde Frau bittet um eine Morphiumspritze. Er spritzt ihr stattdessen eine letale Dosis "Toxin Y". Nach dem Tode seiner Frau kommt der 40-jährige Mörder in Untersuchungshaft. Darin will er "ohne Geständnis und ohne Lüge durchhalten". Der Bruder, nicht der reiche, geizige Vater, kümmert sich um den Häftling. Georg Letham wird "wegen Giftmordes zu lebenslänglicher Zwangsarbeit verurteilt". Ernst Wei (1882-1940) war ein österreichischer Arzt und Schriftsteller. 1928 wurde Wei vom Land Oberösterreich mit dem Adalbert-Stifter-Preis ausgezeichnet. Wei debütierte mit seinem Roman Die Galeere.
