Henry Elijah Alvord: Soldier Brother (in English)
Elizabeth M. Crawford
Synopsis "Henry Elijah Alvord: Soldier Brother (in English)"
This is the life story of a quintessential 19th-century man, Henry Elijah Alvord, who greatly influenced the 20th century. After chasing Mosby in Virginia and fighting with the Union in the Western campaign, he married an older Confederate belle. Then he served as an Indian negotiator at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. As a leader in progressive education, he served as President of the Maryland Agricultural College and other land-grant universities. He ended his career as head of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture. His chosen epitaph, "Soldier-Farmer-Teacher," is a modest tribute to his supremely energetic, productive life of service and research.
