The stories in this collection are largely unknown to the general public and relatively true to their original form, giving readers a closer glimpse of the initial stages of the Brothers Grimm’s process of obsessively editing and rewriting their work. These early, darker versions of the fairy tales are not particularly suitable for children and hint at the pressure the duo felt to alter them in order to avoid harsh criticism. The compilation contains 17 tales, including “Little Brother and Little Sister” and “The Dog and the Sparrow,” each accompanied by a fantastic black-and-white illustration.
