An Alabama cotton farmer's son, Lester Romine grew up amid the hardship of the Great Depression. He picked cotton every morning before school, living a hardscrabble life that instilled in him a strong moral compass and faith. Romine dreamed of flying fighter jets-a new breed of aircraft just soaring skyward as he worked the fields. Commissioned as a US Air Force officer in 1950, the young man got the chance to realize his ambitions, and he ran-or rather flew-with it.
