El relato breve más conocido de Stephen Crane es El hotel azul (1898). Con su caracteristico impresionismo naturalista, Crane recrea el ambiente del Hotel Palace en un pueblecito de Nebraska. Las relaciones entre varios residentes temporales y el propio director del hotel ofrecen un inquietante ambiente, en especial con la llegada de El sueco, un huésped de conducta bronca y desagradable. Lo más interesante del relato es la manera como el narrador consigue generar dudas sobre la actitud de los que deben lidiar con alguien tan disruptivo como El sueco.
