Mary, Mark and Mel are freaks - beyond just the alliteration of their names. Mary is uncomfortably tall and a frighteningly powerful fighter. Mark is an apprentice alchemist who seems to know just a little too much. And Mel is...Mel, a small mouse-eared girl with a concerning technomagical adeptness and a sharply intelligent gaze. For them, life is difficult - but consistent. They go to school together, they talk to as few people as possible, they sit at the freaks' table with the other mutants and monsters for lunch, they go home. However, when Mary has a dark, eerie dream on the way to school one morning, everything begins to go terribly wrong. Her mysterious illness worsens suddenly, and a strange medical mage, Ellen Star, arrives in a suspiciously timely fashion. However, after Mark witnesses the murder of a teacher and Mary's 'disease' drives her to blood-soaked violence, it becomes clear that Ellen isn't there just to help Mary. No, she's there for the murderer. The monster who turned a man into meat. The Tall Man. If that wasn't bad enough, something seems odd about the replacement chemistry teacher. A bizarre detective who appears to be covered in strange bandages is stalking the halls of the school, Hell-bent on finding the killer.
