there are about twenty million ethnic chinese living in southeast asia, constituting almost 85% of all chinese found outside china. as such, any attempt to understand the chinese diaspora will benefit from an analysis of the southeast asian chinese. based on intensive fieldwork and primary data collected in various countries in southeast asia, including thailand, singapore, malaysia, myanmar, indonesia, vietnam and the philippines, one of the main foci of the book relates to who and what is a chinese. what are the markers of ethnic identity? how is ethnic identity presented? are there similarities or differences in how ethnic identity is constructed in different southeast asian countries? southeast asian host countries exhibit very different stances and strategies in dealing with ethnic minority groups. the book examines the nature and process of ethnic relations and interactions between members of the host societies and the chinese migrants. using comparative analysis, it will explore the consequences of state policies on ethnic relations in southeast asia. in doing so, the book contributes to the theoretical debates on ethnic relations by developing new conceptual models on ethnic identity and cultural contact.
