Earle Stibitz, it provides an appropriate setting for a survey of one hundred and fifty years of Illinois writing. Divided into four parts roughly corresponding to significant aspects of Illinois history—“Early Settlers.” “Lincoln,” “Chicago,” and “The Modern Range”—the anthology presents accounts of early settlers, significant selections from Lincoln, a large section devoted to the work of Chicago writers showing the emergence of Chicago as a dominant force in the state’s history, and finally, a selection from twentieth-century Illinois writers.
