....IMMATURI ET INNUPTI..FUNERARY FIGURED TERRACOTTE FROM CORDUBA, COLINIA PATRICIA..56 figured terracotte coming from necropolis in Corduba are studied in relation to others from the rest of Hispania and the northern provinces where they are prolific..These figurines must have been extraordinarily common in Roman society where they would have represented a polysemous way of expressing various feelings related to private religion, expiation of personal sins before the divinity, request of prebends, gifts or sanations before the same gods, friendship and family relationships, with special relation to childhood whose social status they would represent..Once these figurines were included as child funerary goods, they would turn into a social symbol of rupture of a life cut short, still in its physical and social condition of infantia or pueritia..They would simbolize a truncated life and also its purity..These boys and girls had not reached the age of playing with figlina, dying prematurely, immaturi et innupti (Tertuliano, De anima, 56)..In some cases these objects also appear in adult graves, specially those of women. Terracotta busts, as with dolls, would have meant social symbols perfectly understandable for all as ?not achieved weddings? and, by extent, as virginity or maidenhood.
