Wir befinden uns in einer Zeit der "Informationsexplosion". Ein Forscherteam der School of Information Management and Systems der University of California, Berkeley, hat eine neue Studie [Lyman 2003] veröffentlicht, die die Informationsexplosion der letzten Jahre beschreibt. Nach Angaben des Teams wuchs die Zahl der neu gespeicherten Informationen zwischen 1999 und 2002 um etwa 30 % pro Jahr. Weitere Fakten: "Druck-, Film-, magnetische und optische Speichermedien produzierten im Jahr 2002 etwa 5 Exabyte (1 Exabyte = 1018 Bytes, was ungefähr allen von Menschen gesprochenen Wörtern entspricht) an neuen Informationen. Zweiundneunzig Prozent der neuen Informationen wurden auf magnetischen Medien gespeichert, vor allem auf Festplatten ... Das World Wide Web enthält etwa 170 Terabyte (1.024 Gigabyte oder 240 Byte) an Informationen auf seiner Oberfläche, das ist siebzehnmal so viel wie die Drucksammlungen der Library of Congress....E-Mail erzeugt jedes Jahr weltweit etwa 400.000 Terabyte an neuen Informationen.
