Industrial engineering and management cover the essential concepts and methods for running businesses successfully. Dr.P. Sivasankaran, who had taught this subject of industrial engineering and management for more than a decade at Anna University and its affiliated colleges as well as affiliated colleges of Pondicherry University, had recognized the need for a comprehensive text combining these two disciplines and had written this as a result of his rich teaching and research experience. This will serve as a text book for the students of B.E./B.Tech./B.S. (Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Industrial Systems Engineering), M.E./M.Tech./M.S. (Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Management, Production/ Manufacturing Engineering, and Industrial Systems Engineering) and M.B.A. This text begins with plant layout studies, which includes need to locate a plan, influencing factors for plant location and evaluation of location alternatives. Chapter 2 presents plant layout, which discusses types of production systems, mass production system, principles of layout and types of layout. It is followed by a chapter on line balancing, which includes topics on frame of assembly line, types of assemble line, rank positional weight method for single model assembly line balancing and introduction to mixed model assembly line balancing. Chapter 4 presents role of material handling, types of material handling, automated material handling, principles of material handling, factors influencing the selection of material handling equipment and types of material handling equipment. Next, Chapter 5 is on work study, which includes method study, and work measurement techniques. The method study presents different recording techniques, charts and principle of motion economy. The work measurement includes time study, work sampling and predetermined motion time system (PMTS). The next chapter is on production planning and control, which presents functions of production planning and control, materials management, inventory control and production scheduling. Following this chapter, the chapter 7 presents quality control, which includes control charts and acceptance sampling plan. Chapter 8 presents management concepts with detailed focus on nature of management, levels of management, functions of management, and contribution of F.W Taylor and Hendry Fayol to theories of management. Chapter 9 presents need for financial planning, objectives of financial planning, functions of financial management, evaluation of alternatives and break-even analysis. The next chapter 10 is on marketing management, which focusses on marketing philosophy, pricing, channels of distribution, advertising, market research, and SWOT analysis. At the end, human resource management is presented which addresses objectives of human resource management, roles of human resource management, nature of human resource management, scope of human resource management, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, job analysis, job evaluation and management by objectives (MBO). This text is written in easy-to-read style with lot of illustrations to explain the concepts with suitable techniques. Each chapter contains review questions at its end.
