Ivanhoe es la primera de estas obras, trata de Ricardo Corazón de León y las Cruzadas. Su éxito se basa en su indiscutible talento como narrador, su dominio del diálogo, su aguda observación de la sociedad y sus vivos retratos de gitanos, bandoleros y titiriteros. Walter Scott es el primero de los novelistas históricos de importancia dentro de la literatura europea. En sus retratos de Escocia, Inglaterra y Europa continental, desde la época medieval hasta el siglo XVIII, mostró un agudo conocimiento de las fuerzas de la política y de la tradición, y de su influencia en los individuos.
