Walter Scott es el primero de los novelistas históricos de importancia dentro de la literatura europea. En sus retratos de Escocia, Inglaterra y Europa continental, desde la época medieval hasta el siglo XVIII, mostró un agudo conocimiento de las fuerzas de la política y de la tradición, y de su influencia en los individuos.
