Bevor das Jochbein-Implantat von Per-Ingvar Brånemark eingeführt wurde, konnten implantatgetragene oder retinierte festsitzende oder herausnehmbare Prothesen im atrophierten Oberkiefer nur nach einer umfangreichen Kieferkamm-Präparation in Betracht gezogen werden. Das Zygoma-Implantat ist eine verlängerte Titanhalterung, die durch den krestalen Knochenaspekt des resorbierten hinteren Oberkiefers transantral in den kompakten Knochen des Zygoma eingesetzt wird.
