Cuando en torno a 1523 Hans Holbein el Joven emprendió en Basilea la realización de los dibujos que habrían de servir de base a una serie de grabados sobre la Totentanz, la Danza de la Muerte, estaba dando su forma más acabada (y la más difundida posteriormente) a un tema que tenía tan sólo algo más de dos siglos de vida pero que, pese a lo novedoso de su irrupción, había gozado de singular atención en el convulso clima cultural y religioso de los siglos bajomedievales.
