«En la época presente la acción y la decisión son tan escasas como lo es el deleite del riesgo al nadar en aguas poco profundas. Pero tal como el adulto que goza luchando con las olas llama al joven diciéndole ‘sal fuera, corre’, así también la decisión que se encuentra en la existencia (si bien, desde luego, se encuentra en el individuo) llama al joven que aún no ha sido extenuado por el exceso de reflexión ni sobrecargado por las ilusiones de la reflexión…».

Encuadrado en la serie de críticas del presente características del siglo XIX, de Stuart Mill a Spengler, pasando por Tocqueville, Gotthelf y Carlyle, este escrito de Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) describe, con sorprendente actualidad, una época desapasionada en la que «no sucede nada, y sin embargo hay publicidad inmediata».
