The book analyses the emergence of a civil society (in the broad sense of the term, which includes a liberal democracy, a market economy, a plural society and a public space) in Poland, as well as the role played in this transformation by civil society, understood in a more restricted sense as social or associative fabric, particularly the function of the Solidarity movement, the changes in its organization, ideology, strategy and relations with other social and political agents, and with society as a whole. Underpinned by an analysis of the idea of civil society in the historical context of contemporary Poland, the book deals with each stage of the transition from a Communist regime to a liberal democracy and a market economy in Poland, and also analyses the role played by the Catholic Church and intellectual and political dissidence.
