Synopsis "La Sombra"

The protagonist of this novel in which the author ventures for the first time into the realm of fantasy is Dr. Anselmo, an extravagant character. The narrator of the tale is amazed with Dr. Anselmo’s laboratory when he has the honor of visiting, but he must also concede that, mixed in with his awe, he feels a certain horror. He is consoled by the fact that the man who stands before him is among the most affable and harmless he has ever met, above suspicion when it came to any charges of necromancy or engaging in ancient diabolical arts—or so he thinks. Ironic, mysterious, original, and even hilarious at times, this novel is an example of the great Spanish author Benito Pérez Galdós's genius and imagination.
