Cuando escribió La última corrida -una de las pocas novelas largas de tema taurino escritas por una mujer-, Elena Quiroga era joven, pero ya había conseguido, en 1950, el prestigioso Premio Nadal con Viento del Norte. Vino luego una serie de importantes novelas, separadas por períodos de silencio, hasta que en 1983 es elegida miembro de la Real Academia Española.
