Escrita en los medios normales de la poesía dramática española, la comedia es un alarde del ingenio versificador de su autor, que demuestra en ella su dominio tanto de los distintos tipos de versos, como de los más variados recursos humorísticos. Las rimas insólitas, los juegos de palabras y los anacronismos hábilmente combinados provocan en el espectador -y en el lector-una carcajada casi continua. Pedro Muñoz Seca nació en El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) en 1881 y murió en 1936. Fue abogado y profesor, pero su gran vocación era el teatro y, sobre todo, los géneros humorísticos. Cultivó la sátira y la parodia, y fue creador del astracán. Sus numerosísimas comedias obtuvieron grandes éxitos, y, muy especialmente La venganza de Don Mendo que, desde su estreno en el madrileño Teatro de la Comedia en 1918, no ha dejado de representarse y de aplaudirse por toda la geografía nacional.
