Al escritor Iñaki Ezkerra su madre le escondía los libros de Baroja bajo llave: un aliciente más. El antidogmatismo, el asco a la hipocresía, al convencionalismo y a la intolerancia le unieron para siempre con Pío Baroja, con esa «voz de la intemperie» del narrador sin ocultaciones ni artificios y del hombre que opinaba sin necesidad de apoyarse en ningún credo o coartada, sin querer representar a nadie más que a sí mismo.
