Hasta hace unos años la historia de Rulfo como lector estaba distorsionada por la idea de que se trataba de un caso excepcional. Se hablaba de un escritor cercano al realismo que había llegado, como por casualidad, a producir dos libros cuya relevancia nadie podía negar, aunque sus fuentes fueran o bien del todo conocidas (como la ubicua vinculación con William Faulkner) o bien inexistentes. Según esta última versión, Rulfo habría absorbido todos sus rasgos estilísticos y temáticos del medio que lo rodeaba, principalmente de su entorno rural y su historia familiar
