Pero nunca llegó a su destino, pues fue el blanco de varios torpedos lanzados desde un submarino soviético el 30 de  enero de 1945. Apasionada por los capítulos ocultos de la historia, Ruta Sepetys da voz en esta ocasión a cuatro jóvenes protagonistas cuyos caminos se cruzan cuando son evacuados en el Wilhelm Gustloff, como los más de 4.000 niños  y  adolescentes que lo hicieron para ir al encuentro de su futuro. Nunca llegaron, pero sus historias no se hundieron con ellos.
