L'opera consiste in tre conferenze, motivate dalla straordinaria pioggia di meteore osservate nella sera del 27 novembre 1872. Schiaparelli fu il primo a proporre l'esistenza di una connessione tra comete e meteore, attribuendo lo sciame delle Perseidi ai detriti lasciati dietro di sé dalla grande cometa osservata nel 1862, la cui traiettoria è attraversata ogni anno dalla terra tra il 20 luglio e il 19 agosto. Questa cometa fu riscoperta nel 1982 (è la Swift-Tuttle con periodo di 130 anni).
