El escritor emprende un viaje a pie por el condado de Suffolk, en la costa este de Inglaterra, para llenar el vacío que se ha apoderado de su interior al haber concluido un trabajo importante. Sebald funde magistralmente la autobiografía con la historia y con historias, anécdotas, conjeturas y recuerdos a caballo entre la realidad y la ficción, en los que la civilización y la naturaleza se muestran en sus variedades más amplias. Son muchos los personajes que acompañan a Sebald en su viaje interno y externo, y a los que este concede la palabra: Thomas Browne, Chateaubriand, Swinburne, Joseph Conrad, Borges...
