"Si Marx hubiera sido realmente ese muchacho modelo que veneran los sacerdotes del marxismo jamás me hubiera sentido tentado a escribir este libro", dice el autor de la mejor biografía sobre Marx. Mehring publicó este texto en 1918, un año antes de su muerte. Integrante del Partido Socialdemócrata Alemán, junto a Rosa Luxemburgo, Karl Liebknecht y Clara Zetkin fundaron el Grupo Espartaco y se opusieron a la Primera Guerra Mundial. "Franz Mehring fue uno de los teóricos más profundos, más luminosos y más eruditos del marxismo, autor de una serie de obras profundas y admirables", escribió José Carlos Mariátegui.
