Este libro es el retrato que Löwenstern trazó del México de 1838. Ante sus ojos, la incipiente nación, con su exotismo natural y culinario, sus experimentos políticos y culturales, aparece como una imagen pervertida del modelo occidental: una sociedad conformada por holgazanes, ladrones y borrachos a quienes solo el ilustra do tutelaje de un monarca podría salvar. Sin proponérselo, Löwenstern reveló una radiografía perfecta de la identidad europea (antes que la mexicana) durante el siglo XIX, una esmerada proyección del "otro", envilecido y salvaje.
