Synopsis "Mon frère Yves (in French)"

Le roman raconte l'histoire d'un jeune marin breton, Yves Kermadec, lequel a hérité de l'alcoolisme qui mine sa famille depuis des générations. Il est pris en amitié par un officier du même âge que lui, le narrateur Pierre (Loti), qui fait serment devant la mère âgée du jeune homme de l'aider et de le protéger: Je jure de veiller sur lui toute ma vie, comme s'il était mon frère. D'où le titre du roman. Yves se marie, a un fils prénommé Pierre, comme son ami, et après bien des hauts et des bas, il renoncera à l'alcool et finira par se ranger. Mon frère Yves est le seul roman de Loti qui se termine bien, même si la dernière page laisse entendre qu'une rechute est toujours possible.
