Synopsis "Moral Corporal, Trastornos Alimentarios y Clase Social"

This book offers an extremely original investigation -based on thorough empirical research- regarding a matter which has acquired great importance in recent years: eating disorders and their social and cultural determining factors. From a sophisticated sociological perspective, special attention is paid to gender relations, the variety of class cultures and society's relationship with the therapeutic milieu. Throughout the book the author explores how the term "eating disorder" is defined both by specialists and by those affected and those close to them. In addition, the eating culture of a significant group of people affected and their family milieus is reconstructed in order to analyse the social factors that cause certain people to reduce their food intake and why, as a result, a conflict arises with those with whom they share their everyday life. Finally, the book seeks to determine which social practices -including those of a therapeutic nature, among others- enable people to overcome eating disorders and withstand the pressures which emanate from the health and beauty industry. The book -and hence its title- raises important questions about the philosophical problems of body ethics and body politics, referring to authors such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Erving Goffman and Pierre Bourdieu.
