Synopsis "More than Brooms: : GIS-Based Mapping and Survey of Tiger Grasses in Northern Tablas, Philippines (in English)"

Cultivation and domestication of tiger grass, Thysanolaena maxima (Roxb.) O. Kuntze, is a long time economic activity in Northern Tablas, an island in the province of Romblon that is strategically located at the heart of the Philippine archipelago where these grasses grow in abundance. The plant is prized for its inflorescences which are processed into soft brooms. But, its unique biology and reported uses in industry, agriculture, medicine, environmental management, bioengineering, climate change mitigation and phytoremediation have gradually caught the interest of many researchers in Southeast Asia. This book is a product of the author's five-year researches on tiger grass which were funded by Romblon State University, Department of Trade and Industry, and Department of Science and Technology. It includes a comprehensive review of the biology and uses of tiger grass from a global perspective, an anthology of several local studies done about it, profiles of the tiger grass industry, and tiger grass resource maps. With improved farming practices, adoption of mature technologies and awareness of its multiple benefits, this crop might just rise from the grassroots to become one of the most promising non-timber forest products in the country.
