David Cordingly es licenciado en Historia por la Universidad de Oxford y doctor por la Universidad de Sussex. Trabajó durante doce años en el Museo Marítimo Nacional de Londres, del que fue conservador y director de exposiciones. Es una autoridad en historia marítima y ha publicado diversos libros sobre pintura naval inglesa y holandesa y sobre historia de la piratería, entre los que destacan Maritime painting in England, 1700-1900 (1974), Nicholas Pocock, maritime artist (1986), Captain James Cook, navigator (1994), Pirates: an illustrated history (1996), Ships and Seascapes: an introduction on maritime prints, drawings and watercolours (1997) y Mujeres en el mar.
