Joachim Nettelbeck lebte von 1732 bis 1824 und wurde in Kolberg an der Ostsee geboren. Er schildert mit eigenen Worten sein gutes, lustiges, aber auch gefährliches Leben. Neunjährig läuft er davon, wird Smutje, später Steuermann und endlich Kapitän. Er lernt alle wichtigen Häfen in ganz Europa kennen, erleidet Schiffbrüche, wird selbst Sklavenhändler in Afrika und Surinam, und ist ein sehr aktiver Verteidiger seiner Heimatstadt gegen die Franzosen.
