Nina Berberova nacio en San Petersburgo en 1901. Determinada a convertirse en poetisa, huyo de Rusia tras de la Revolucion y atraveso Berlin y Praga hasta llegar a Francia, donde vivio unos anos de exilio. Conocio la miseria, el desconcierto de los emigrantes y la dureza del trabajo por la supervivencia. En 1950 se sometio a un nuevo exilio en los Estados Unidos, donde estudio ingles hasta su perfecto dominio, para llegar a ser profesora en Yale, Columbia y Princeton. Hasta mucho mas tarde no se conoceria como una excelente narradora de su Siglo.
