Es la historia de Abelardo y Eloísa una de las cumbres de la literatura medieval, pero también una leyenda que traspasa las barreras del tiempo, pues su amor desembocó en un drama humano pocas veces igualable. Así, en esta novela, Alfonso Palomares nos cuenta una historia de amor trágica e infeliz, pero, fiel a la verdad histórica, casi austero, se acerca a ella con la sabiduría de quien conoce las profundidades del alma humana y de la Historia, con mayúsculas. Pues, como bien resume el verso recogido en el epitafio de Abelardo, escrito por su dulce amante: «Contigo soporté las desgracias / que contigo, cansada, duermo».
