Este libro proporciona datos inéditos sobre la recepción en España de "El Paraíso perdido" (1667) de John Milton (1608-1674), una de las obras literarias más perseguidas por la censura política y religiosa en Europa desde finales del siglo XVII (de hecho, las traducciones españolas son claro ejemplo de autocensura). Estas páginas no sólo matizan las observaciones críticas sobre la obra de Milton, traducida e imitada por autores importantes del siglo XVIII (Cadalso, Jovellanos y Meléndez Valdés), sino que agregan copiosa información, hasta ahora desconocida, sobre la presencia de Milton en el Romanticismo español, introducida fundamentalmente por Alberto Lista.
