Rebelion en Asturias relata la insurreccion obrera de 1934 y la implacable represion del ejercito enviado por la Republica para contenerla y que termino por regar de sangre toda la region. Un año despues de la sublevacion, desde Argel y con solo 22 años, Albert Camus escribio esta obra de teatro como homenaje al espiritu de lucha del pueblo asturiano y a las mas de 1500 personas que fueron asesinadas, en su mayor parte civiles. En palabras de Romain Rolland, "desde la Comuna de Paris no se habia visto nada tan hermoso como el movimiento revolucionario de Asturias".
