El presente volumen se conforma por una serie de entrevistas a nueve de los secretarios de Salud de México entre 1982 y 2017: Guillermo Soberón, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, José Antonio González Fernández, Julio Frenk, José Ángel Córdova, Salomón Chertorivski, Mercedes Juan y José Narro, además de una entrevista con Jaime Sepúlveda Amor a nombre de Jesús Kumate. A través de ellas, Germán Fajardo analiza el rumbo del sistema de salud mexicano a lo largo de más de tres décadas: el paso de un sistema de seguridad social a uno de protección social, de carácter más universal. La obra se complementa con una introducción histórica, escrita por Carlos Viesca, que va desde la fundación de la Secretaría de Salud en 1943 y hasta 1982.
