Social scientists, such as M. Castells, Z. Bauman, J. Law or A. Mol, have devoted their efforts to understanding the complex, unpredictable and unstable forms currently taken by capital flows, information exchanges, new social space-times or the identities and agencies forged therein. In one way or another, all these investigations point to a new theoretical model which regards social reality as a fluid reality. This is an ongoing theorization which, among other things, requires the creation of conceptual frameworks that help us to observe this social fluidity and facilitate the model's applicability to specific events and processes. The creation of such frameworks is precisely the main objective of this book. After dismantling some prejudices against the viability of this theoretical model and recovering some relevant antecedents, the book focuses in detail on the origin and development of the concepts of chronotope and envelope and, above all, demonstrates their applicability as instruments with which to perceive the complexity and instability of current events and processes, thus making their mapping possible. Other elements which assist us in this task are also considered, such as the "attractor" concept and the growing process of interaction between centre and periphery, which exemplifies the application of this entire conceptual scheme. Finally, the concluding section invites us to take part in constructing a mapping which remains necessarily open and locally determined. This book is a timely and valuable contribution to what is already an emerging paradigm in the social sciences.
